Areas of Need

There are four broad areas (categories) of SEND, these are:

  • Communication and Interaction

This area of need includes children with Autism Spectrum Condition and those with Speech, Language and Communication Needs.

  • Cognition and Learning

This includes children with Specific Learning Difficulties, Moderate Learning Difficulties, Severe Learning Difficulties and Profound and Multiple Learning Difficulties.

  • Social, Emotional and Mental Health Difficulties

This includes any children who have an emotional, social or mental health need that is impacting on their ability to learn.

  • Sensory and/or Physical Difficulties

This area includes children with a hearing impairment, visual impairment, multi-sensory impairment and physical difficulties.

Your child’s area/s of need will be named on their SEN or EHC Plan.

We provide a wide range of different interventions for each area of need/SEN. Some examples are listed below.

Cognition and Learning

  • Regular, individual/small group focussed intervention.
  • Practical aids for learning e.g. word banks, number lines.
  • Power Up! Lexia literacy programme.
  • Read Write Inc phonics programme
  • Access to technical aids e.g. ICT software and/or hardware.
  • Exam access arrangements.
  • Handwriting / Typing intervention.
  • Targeted QFT.

Communication and Interaction

  • Visual timetables and supports.
  • Modifications to break times and lunch times.
  • Access to technology where appropriate.
  • Careful planning of transitions.
  • Lego Therapy.
  • Social Skills / Friendship Skills intervention.
  • Social Stories and Comic Strip conversations.
  • Tactile sensory objects and/or ear defenders.
  • Exam access arrangements.

SEMH

  • Access to counselling.
  • Small group work targeting social, emotional and mental health difficulties e.g. Starving the Anxiety Gremlin, Starving the Anger Gremlin, Zones of Regulation.
  • Lego Therapy.
  • Social Skills intervention.
  • Mentoring.
  • Exam access arrangements.
  • Tactile sensory objects and/or ear defenders.

Sensory and/or Physical

  • Access to practical aids for learning and/or mobility.
  • Access to technology/ICT where appropriate.
  • Environmental adaptations to suit cohort/individual needs.
  • Adaptations of resources and/or curriculum to enable full access.
