At Greenfield Academy we are committed to providing a stable careers education, information, advice and guidance (CEIAG) programme to all learners, to provide them with the knowledge and skills required to make successful transitions to the next stages in their education, employment or training.

We encourage all children to develop high aspirations and aim to inspire them, widening their horizons through promoting a broad and ambitious range of careers to support them making informed decisions to suit their individual needs.

Our CEIAG programme has been developed around the 8 Gatsby Benchmarks for Good Career Guidance. Greenfield Academy is proud to have been one of the initial pilot schools for the benchmarks and is recognised in helping to shape the delivery of these.

Our Provision

CEIAG is delivered across all year groups.

Year 7

In Year 7 students are introduced to the CEIAG programme at Greenfield Academy.

They will consider what their aspirations are for the future, what their strengths and areas for development are and how these relate to the world of work.
They will look at school subjects and how these can lead to a related career
They will think about their own hobbies and interests and how these might link to future career plans.
They will reflect on their time management and how to make the most of each day.
They will explore employment sectors using Labour Market Information (LMI)
They will take part in an externally provided enterprise day opportunity.

They will explore entrepreneurship, how they can demonstrate entrepreneurial skills and discuss what makes a successful entrepreneur.
They will be provided with an opportunity to experience the world of work by shadowing a friend/relative for a day in the Summer Term.

Year 8

In Year 8 students begin to consider the different opportunities that are available to them.

They will explore different learning pathways that are available to them, through technical, vocational, academic and apprenticeship routes.
They will look at gender roles and discuss stereotypes and the suitability for all different types of people to do different jobs.
They will explore employment sectors using Labour Market Information (LMI).
They will take part in an externally provided enterprise day opportunity.
They will be provided with an opportunity to experience the world of work by shadowing a friend/relative for a day in the Summer Term.

Year 9

In Year 9 students will focus on their next steps, including which GCSE options they are considering.

They will consider their own skills and how these relate to careers that interest them.
They will explore their career matches and investigate the pathways towards these careers.
They will explore employment sectors using Labour Market Information (LMI).
They will participate in a Virtual Work Experience programme local employers.
They will have the opportunity to visit our Careers fair to speak with a range of employers and further education/training providers.
They will take part in an externally provided enterprise day opportunity including being provided with opportunities to explore new option subjects available to them in Year 10.
They will be provided with an opportunity to experience the world of work by shadowing a friend/relative for a day in the Summer Term.

Year 10

In Year 10 students will begin to form a plan for their Post-16 study.

They will reflect on their personality style to help them identify the type of work environment and tasks they will enjoy.
They will develop their own pathway plan for their next steps beyond Greenfield Academy.
They will explore employment sectors using Labour Market Information (LMI).
They will understand how to successfully create and manage a budget.
They will explore the effective use of social media and their own online appearance for the workplace.
They will learn how to create an effective CV and covering letter.
They will receive an independent careers guidance discussion with a qualified adviser and receive an individual action plan from this.
They will participate in a mock interview with a local employer.
They will have the opportunity to visit a range of Post-16 providers for taster visits.
They will take part in an externally provided enterprise day opportunity including a careers fair involving local employers and colleges.
They will participate in Work Experience for a week.

Year 11

In Year 11 students will begin to take their next steps into further education, employment or training.

They will be supported with application clinics for their Post-16 choices.
They will explore application and interview skills.
Some students who may be at risk of becoming NEET (Not in Education, Employment or Training) will have the opportunity for support from DurhamWorks on a range of activities to ensure they progress to a suitable destination.

Learners with special educational needs will receive further support linked to their own individual needs including;

Destinations

In developing our CEIAG programme to meet the needs of our learners and support their career journey beyond Greenfield Academy, further work has been undertaken to encourage students to select an appropriate and sustainable destination.

In Year 11 students’ intended destinations are tracked and regularly discussed with them to ensure all students have a suitable Post-16 destination. This information is shared with DurhamWorks to provide additional support to students who may be at risk of becoming NEET.

Enterprise Adviser Network

Greenfield is a member of the Enterprise Adviser Network through the North-East Local Enterprise Partnership. We work closely with our enterprise adviser Jasper Maudsley to ensure our CEIAG programme enables all of our students to develop the knowledge and skills required to meet employers’ demands.

Evaluation of the CEIAG programme

Greenfield uses the Compass Careers Tool to assess provision against the Gatsby benchmarks on a termly basis and the CDI Framework on an annual basis.

Evaluation also takes place through student voice activities and as part of the school QA process.

Provider Access

As part of our commitment to informing our children of the full range of learning and training pathways on offer to them, we will consider requests from approved training, apprenticeship and vocational education providers to speak to students. This complies with the school’s legal obligations under Section 42B of the Education Act 1997 (the ‘Baker Clause’).

We also proactively seek to build relationships with such partners as we plan our careers information and guidance throughout the school year to ensure that providers have opportunities to speak to students and their parents in Years 7-11, to offer information on vocational, technical and apprenticeship qualifications and pathways.
